Title:

Towards nonlinear optics at x-ray energies with Mössbauer nuclei

Abstract:

In the last decade, Mössbauer nuclei have emerged as a new platform to implement quantum optics with hard x-ray photons. However, current experiments still operate in the linear optics regime and nonlinear effects have not yet been observed. In this talk, we will discuss how concepts from cavity QED may enable progress in this direction. First, we provide a theoretical explanation for the so-called collective Lamb shift, which was observed experimentally with Mössbauer nuclei in the linear regime a decade ago. We show that the observed shift is a result of multi-mode contributions in the cavity setup. Second, we make predictions on and propose a setup for how to achieve ensemble inversion at current x-ray facilities utilizing such multi-mode cavity effects.
