Title:

Simulating quantum many-body dynamics in systems with collective couplings and dissipation

Abstract:

Simulating the non-equilibrium dynamics of many interacting quantum particles on a classical computer is a challenging task due to the build-up of strong (quantum) correlations. The problem seems to become even more difficult in the presence of long-range couplings, and in cases where one wants to include couplings to an environment. In this talk I will discuss that the situation is in fact much more subtle. I will introduce numerical matrix product state methods for the simulation of such models, and show how the numerical complexity of simulations is directly connected to the entanglement build-up in the dynamics. Remarkably, entanglement build-up can be less important when introducing long-range interactions. Furthermore, dissipation leads to decoherence and our method can exploit this to make simulations more efficient. I will demonstrate the usefulness of our numerical approaches with recent research results for the dynamics of cavity-coupled quantum emitters.
